Šarūnė Kalininaitė, or 5sarunes, is a visual maker based in Lithuania. She began developing her practice at Alytus Art School in her early teenage years, and not long after, her work turned out to be playful and sarcastic - questioning things she’d been told and taught, like perspective in drawing.
During five years of education at Alytus Art School and an additional year at M.K. Čiurlionis Art School in Vilnius, she developed a visual language grounded in humour, doubt, and experimentation - a foundation that would later shape her attitude toward the art world itself.
In 2012, she went on to study Sculpture at the University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts, where she targeted art system and the whole structure of the course or ignored it altogether, making irrelevant installations. During that time, she participated in numerous group exhibitions, mocking the art establishment and art-related activities.
It comes as no surprise that as soon as Šarūnė graduated, she took a break from visual making to focus on research into animal welfare, environmental issues, consumerism, and the art supply industry. Nevertheless, she remained involved in the visual arts field, working as a digital illustrator, an art instructor for adults, and a teacher for visiting foreign students.
Returning to Lithuania in 2021, Šarūnė rekindled her personal practice and began teaching at Alytus Art School. Today, her work is as satirical as ever - aimed at broader human absurdities and the world’s calamities. Sharply focused on the message rather than mastery, she keeps it raw, quick, documentary-like; always looking for ways to implement her ideas responsibly and with as few resources as possible.
